Short Story

Attic
©2003 Elizabeth L. Clark

It was so hot here. Only one tiny window and it was only opened a crack and nailed to prevent it from opening further.

There was nothing but old blankets for her bed and a bucket for her to use as a toilet. Water was in a gallon jug and food was an apple... for all day.

The child had never known anything but this. No freedom, no love. Her dark grey eyes were intelligent, if dulled by anguish. Her chestnut locks were long and tangled from lack of care.

The attic had always been her home. She used to cry and plead to be held, loved. But beatings resulted from that and she ceased in self-defense.

Now she simply took what was offered and said nothing. She only made noise when she knew all in the house were gone. Then she sang.

She would look out the tiny opening of the window sing out her hurt, her longing. Her voice was ethereal and soared to the heavens.

They had slipped in and left her the apple and more water earlier, but she was saving the shriveled fruit for later. Now she looked out at the foggy world and sang her heart out, tears streaking her pale cheeks.

From the trees beyond the Victorian house a figure listened and watched. His dark grey eyes filled with wonder and anger. With a whispered word he appeared behind her.

She turned and looked into her own eyes and knew... knew this was who she had been calling for. No words were needed as he scooped her up and cradled her thin body close.

In the blink of an eye they vanished and left behind the dusty attic and the withered apple. As they vanished he whispered a short phrase and the house seemed to shimmer then darken.

Nothing would be happy there ever again and the spirit of a young woman was finally laid to rest. Her beloved had finally found their child and reclaimed her. The Elf would make up for all the hurts the girl had suffered and give her the love she had been denied. Never again would she view the world through a tiny attic window.

I wonder

Why is it that so many religions only see theirs as the true one when we all take different paths for the same needs?

Rambling

Ohhh Marlena, don't you know you're gonna dream your life away! BCR, one of my fave songs from them. Doing all I can to keep from crying or letting the depression take hold and lead me down that deep dark hole that lives within my soul.

Singing out loud despite knowing it annoys the flying fuck out of the others in the house. Singing makes me feel better so I sing, to hell with the world at large.

Shay never complains, she loves me enough to tolerate it and Aaz shuts her door and puts in her ear buds. Can you tell I am in a mood today? I've been a healer in most of my lives, and I still don't know who heals the healers.

I'm Empathic, I feel everything others feel and it is not something I can ignore. When I feel someone hurting, I have to reach out to help them, no matter the toll it takes on me.

I wish I were a full on Telepath, the good I could do, sweet Goddess can you imagine? *Shakes head* I could talk for those who can't speak for themselves, talk to those who are locked inside themselves...the uses are endless.

Another Sept. 13th

Today is September 13th, my precious little sister's birthday. She would have been 47 today, but the drugs she used to try and fill the hole inside her took her life several years ago. The damage our so called parents did to us, hurt her than myself or our middle sister.

She was the best of us, beautiful, funny, active, but so very wounded. I wish I could go back in time and prevent her from being abused, but I know I can't. All I can do is keep talking about the hell we grew up in and reach out to others and let them know they're not alone.

Lola, I hope to find you in another life and make sure you live in a loving, gentle and happy home. I will forever love and miss you.

Temptation

On my kitchen table is a container holding slices of marbled pound cake. Yes, buttery, chocolate swirled pound cake. As anyone who knows me well can tell you, I am a sweets junkie, not a good thing for a fifty year old, fat, type II diabetic to be.

But I have not touched it, gazed at it longingly yes, touched it no. For me that is a Herculean feat, akin to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro naked, drunk and coated with oil. I will seek out sugar free treats when we go shopping next and do my best to not be lured in by the aisles of sugar and fat laden things that make it hard to keep my diabetes under control and even harder to get back to my normal weight of around 200.

*Holds up hand* Don't EVEN tell me that is still too fat, I was born with TRIPLE the estrogen of a normal woman and as a result will always be round. Two hundred is a good weight for me and I need to get back to that.
